Today, Netflix (-0.51%) launches its Attenborough-narrated Our Planet, a heartily budgeted eight-episode nature documentary that, as The Atlantic puts it, “says what other nature series have omitted.”
- It’ll focus more on the realities of climate change—and how Netflix bingers themselves have contributed—than predecessors like Blue Planet and Planet Earth have.
Darwin would be proud. Discovery just announced a 10-year deal for the rights to all natural history programming from the BBC for an upcoming streaming service (release date: 2020). The £300 million ($392 million) content tie-in is the BBC’s biggest ever.
As for Discovery, it's continuing to sidestep the scripted entertainment space, where it could easily become lunch for a Disney-sized lion.
Plus, natural history has been a solid programming bet for decades. Discovery’s most-watched program ever is a three-hour, BBC-produced special from 2000 called “Walking With Dinosaurs.”
