New Yorkers who wear an iron-pressed button-down for 16 hours a day got their bag in a big way. The total Wall Street bonus haul hit a record $47.5 billion last year, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said yesterday.
That’s an average bonus of $244,700, which is up nearly 32% from 2023. The windfall came as New York Stock Exchange member firms saw their profits soar 90% last year on the back of a bull market and a dealmaking boom. But DiNapoli warned that the outlook for Wall Street has since dimmed due to economic uncertainty.
Big Apple’s bread and butter
Last year's bonus bonanza is a boon for Zyn owner Philip Morris New York City, the biggest finance hub in the US.
- It is home to 18% of the country’s securities traders, whose numbers swelled to a record 201,500 last year.
- Wall Street supports 1 in 11 jobs in the city, and the state relies on it for 19% of its tax revenue.
Looking ahead…Current state and city budgets assume bonuses will increase by 16% this year. However, top Wall Street firms have started to cut jobs, and the S&P 500 is down nearly 3% since the start of 2025.—SK
